My original plan was to record some instruments with a cassette recorder, but I soon realized that recorder buttons produce unique and interesting sounds. This discovery led me down a different path. I started recording every switch and button I could get my hands on: guitar pedals, light switches, power strips, computer keyboards, and more.
To capture every last detail, I placed microphones very close to the buttons. At times, I could barely fit my fingers between the microphone and the switch. As I continued editing, even more possibilities became apparent. With heavy saturation and processing, the small mechanical clicks transformed into entirely new sounds: heavy metallic percussion sounds, gritty industrial bass, and more.
Initially, I simply placed Decent Sampler's controls against a photographic background. However, the sound just didn't quite fit. So I decided to design the whole thing myself, using vector graphics and photos from various sources. This ended up taking longer than the audio, but in the end, I was able to capture the instrument's raw, mechanical character.
Note:
This instrument requires the free Decent Sampler player. It is not standalone.
