Going backward is the new forward.
Rewind is MSoundFactory's unique instrument dedicated to the art of reverse sound. It combines a granular engine with reverse tape loops to transform 128 samples into completely new sounds. Adding a touch of lo-fi grit, Rewind creates a wide range of sonic variations, from beautiful, poetic chimes and nostalgic pads to mysterious, ominous textures perfect for suspenseful music.

Granular Engine

At the heart of Rewind is a powerful granular sampler. Select one of 128 sound sources, break the sample down into tiny fragments called "grains," and play them backward. This processing can be easily controlled with parameters such as Position (starting position within the sample), Density (number of grains played simultaneously), and Size (length of each grain). You can also add stereo width, create unpredictable sounds with Chaos and Detune, or add crackle with the Dust control for a vintage feel.

Lo-Fi Module

The Lo-Fi section adds character and imperfection with two simple knobs. The digital control adds a bit-crushing-like roughness, while the analog knob adds warmth, saturation, and subtle pitch instability. A dedicated switch sets the Lo-Fi effect as either pre-filter (processed by the filter) or post-filter (affecting the final sound).

Filter and Envelope

Shape the sound you're looking for with a versatile multi-mode filter with frequency and resonance controls. Choose from low-pass, band-pass, high-pass, and notch modes to craft your exact tone. Dynamics are controlled by two dedicated ADSR envelopes. The AMP ENV modulates the overall volume, while the FILTER ENV modulates the cutoff, allowing you to create anything from a sharp pluck sound to a dynamic pad.

Tape Loop

This section emulates the classic reverse tape effect, playing synchronized audio backwards. The Rewind knob controls the core character, while the Half (Octave Down) and Double (Octave Up) knobs adjust the playback speed to add rhythmic variation. Age and Wash add realistic artifacts. The Regen control creates a dynamic feedback loop, while Fade creates smooth transitions.

FX and Master

The Rewind effects suite includes five modules: a lush chorus, a swirling rotary speaker, a metallic flanger, and a tempo-synced filtered delay and spacious reverb. The central Order Panel is the highlight, allowing you to drag and drop modules into any sequence. This allows you to easily create custom effect chains, expanding the possibilities for truly unique sound design. The Master Section allows you to tailor your sound to fit your mix perfectly. Sharpen your tone with the 3-band EQ and dual high-pass/low-pass filters, and adjust the stereo image with the Width and Mono controls. Add punch and warmth with the one-knob compressor and saturation effect, and boost the final volume with the Maximize function.

Quick Results

For instant inspiration and quick adjustments, the intro screen strips Rewind down to its three most important controls. The large central Rewind knob controls the amount of the reverse tape loop effect. Flanking it are the Digital and Analog knobs, allowing you to quickly adjust the sonic character, from subtle warmth to a heavy digital sound. You can also directly switch between 128 sound sources from this screen. For deeper sound exploration, use the dice icon at the bottom of the screen as a powerful randomizer. Intelligently change all parameters across an entire instrument with a single click and instantly generate unexpected new patches.

Partially Free

If you already own MSoundFactory or MSoundFactoryLE, Rewind is completely free to download. Simply launch MPluginManager to get started. However, it can also be purchased separately and used in conjunction with MSoundFactory Player, a free version of MSoundFactory.
