Introducing Inphonik's PCM2612 Retro Decimator Unit, a free bitcrusher plug-in that emulates the Sega Mega Drive sound chip.
Released in 2021, this free plug-in, Inphonik "PCM2612 Retro Decimator Unit" is a bitcrusher that emulates the sounds of Sega's Mega Drive first model. It emulates the line output circuitry of the Sega Genesis Model 1, and is capable of 8-bit decimation.
Two output modes with different tones, Legacy and Crystal Clear, are available. The realism of the sound is a true gem, and it can reproduce retro game sounds different from those of ordinary bit crushers. The UI can be changed to portrait or landscape, and unusually, AAX is also supported.
PCM2612 Retro Decimator Unit is a bit crusher effect based on the same technology developed for Inphonik's RYM2612 Iconic FM Synthesizer (a representation of the Sega Genesis sound chip). 8 bit decimation inherited from the FM synthesizer's PCM playback capabilities and packed into a simple, compact effects unit. It provides a unique 8-bit quantization and aliasing effect to plugged-in sounds. On the one hand, distortion is added by 8-bit quantization; on the other, aliasing is added by resampling. The PCM2612 can also emulate the line output circuitry of the Sega Genesis Model 1 released in 1988.
